An Account of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Floor

During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I assumed to book accommodation when I arrived, but once I got there, a major event was in town and all the youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on public transport and started wandering towards a gaming venue, believing I might spend those hours in a place operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for acing an interview the next day, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more individuals like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared confused because a young woman saw me wandering around the city and inquired if everything was alright. I shared my predicament and without hesitation she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: one sandwiches she brought back her work shift. This gave me the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest to sleep.

In retrospect, I can appreciate the significant risk she accepted as a young woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. In those days I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did go to ANU, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish karma has returned her good deed many times over. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
