Citizens have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader added on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the plan.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the deal.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Matters in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
  • After-conflict administration of the area

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until each abducted person are released no one will be secure."

"When we see all home returned, we can relax again. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the captives. Israel reports 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do any agreement needed for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population want the conflict to conclude in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side district, area and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"When the dusk arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city reported additional victims had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south, medical staff said.
