The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
